About
Open since 1937, The Rock Inn Mountain Tavern started as a simple sandwich shop at the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. In 1943 it added a dance hall, and during the Big Band Era it became the community's go-to spot for food and live music. Today it still draws crowds with hearty, locally sourced American fare: grain bowls, steaks, elk, bison, trout, and salads, paired with nightly live music.
They don't take reservations, so call ahead to get on the waiting list. It fills fast, especially in summer.
Vibe
The log cabin exterior is the real thing, not a renovation designed to look rustic. Inside, wooden beams, soft lighting, and a stone fireplace keep things warm. Local art covers the walls alongside old photos of the tavern's history, and a small stage sits off the main dining room where musicians (usually acoustic solo acts, occasionally a trio) play mountain classics, ballads, and light jazz most nights.
When the weather cooperates, the outdoor patio opens up with fresh air and mountain views. Two wood-burning stoves keep the dining room cozy through winter, so it's a year-round destination.
Menu & Drinks
Start with the Devils on Horseback: garlic-stuffed, bacon-wrapped dates with aioli. Or try the Smoked Elk Sausage and Spicy Corn Dip. The Caesar salad uses a traditional homemade dressing with raw eggs and anchovies; the Gem Lake salad pairs mixed greens with olive tapenade, pepperoncini, roasted red peppers, feta, and herb vinaigrette.
Mains run from a ½-pound Angus burger and 10" thin-crust pizzas to a char-grilled 7-oz filet mignon cut from Gold Canyon Natural Gourmet Angus beef. Pasta and grain bowls cover bison marinara, spicy Southwest pasta, Stroganoff, and a salmon bowl. The Alpine Old Fashioned (Breckenridge Bourbon, pine syrup, muddled orange, black walnut bitters, cherry) is the drink to order.
